New in Barcelona

New in Barcelona
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Year founded: around 2010
Stage: Mature community platform with planned transition toward a digital magazine and monetized web ecosystem
Type: International community platform and event network connecting newcomers, expats, and locals in Barcelona through free meetups, language exchanges, activity groups, practical information channels, and digital communities
New in Barcelona is a mature community ecosystem for international and local residents in Barcelona. It combines free events, activity groups, digital channels, language exchange, housing and job groups, practical information, and social integration tools. Its methodology is based on consistency, open access, clear rules, real-life activities, and cross-platform visibility. The project’s strongest result is its scale and continuity, with approximately 160000 people across Facebook, 16800 WhatsApp contacts, more than 9000 Meetup members, and participation from around 107 nationalities. The current model is still mostly non-monetized, with all events free except personal consumption costs, but the founder plans to develop newbarcelona.com into a digital magazine supported by affiliates, sponsors, discounts, and useful city content. The project shows that community building can become civic infrastructure when it is maintained with trust, moderation, and long-term commitment.
